Modal

Modal: A word used along with a verb to indicate possibility, obligation, or necessity.

Examples: can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, might, must, ought to

can/will: I can eat an apple whenever I want to. [possibility]
should/ought to: you should thank them for helping you out. [obligation]
must: you must possess a work permit if you want to work in this country. [necessity]
