Object

Object: The noun or noun phrase following the main verb in a sentence. In active voice, the object receives the action of the verb; in passive voice, the object does the action of the verb.

Some verbs (like “sleep” and “cry”) take no object; others (like “hit” and “lift”) have only a direct object; still other verbs (like “give” and “serve”) have a direct as well as an indirect object.

Examples:
She lifted the bag [direct object = the bag]
He gave me a book [direct object = a book, indirect object = me]
