Tips on improving Vocabulary
Building one’s vocabulary is a lifelong project. Even the most advanced users of English frequently come across new words. Here are some tips on how to improve your vocabulary:
- Read widely, from diverse areas like politics, history, popular science, sports, psychology, and of course, fiction. Resolve to finish at least one book every week.
- Read a well-edited newspaper every day (for Indian learners, we recommend The Hindu). Make sure you read the editorial page - which is a rich source of words and ideas. International newspapers like The Guardian and The New York Times are available online and free of charge. Consult a dictionary when you come across unfamiliar words.
- Write at least one page on a new topic every day. Consult a thesaurus whenever you feel a particular word isn’t expressing your idea well enough.
Resources for reference:
- When you come across a new word, consult a Dictionary.
- When you want to use a better word, consult a Thesaurus.
